people we like @ Berlin – Elizabeth Peyton

I discovered Elizabeth Peyton in 2002 in NYC. Venturing to the PS1 for the first time with my friend Lys we saw these fabulous drawings on paper , and one of them hit me with incredible force. It was a portrait of the British solo sailor Ellen McArthur, in an orange heavy-duty boat gear, her short cropped hair swept by the wind and her eyes glowing from a gale-proof smile like the one you see in the picture here below. It was incredible to see how Peyton had managed to introduce humble children’s crayons in the domain of sublime portraiture. How sad I can’t find the image of that portrait online.

Many of her crayon drawings were executed on hotel stationery and that was quite interesting too. A hotel room is in many cases a place where we feel a bit lonely, a bit lost and with the urge to phone home. We may even spend a few words about the room – commenting horrible flowery chintz curtains or minimalist bathrooms bordering on cryptic – when in the reality we’re just trying to mask our unease of being docked temporarily on the other side of the planet like a cargo waiting for a new destination.

The most recent works by Peyton retain that force and elaborate it further. I love the close-ups like this one, Isa Genzken – everyday snapshots, modern Fayum – but also her wider angles, where the contemporary body language is powerfully sketched like in Klara, above.

For some reason Peyton makes me feel at home, no matter where I am.

(Tommaso Pincio “Hotel a zero stelle”) ;-)
